Embarking from Port Ellen won the Biscuit Prize in 2011 resulting in the publication of Uphill to the Sea. The majority of the poems in the collection have won prizes in international competitions including the Arvon, Jack Clemo, Trewithen and Aesthetica. Divided into sections the reader is transported from rural landscapes to examine war and its aftermath. An affectionate look at relationships takes us to Searching for Signs: thirteen voices of archetypal women inspired by pagan moons. Poems written on the beautiful Hebridean island of Islay complete the book. ‘Sung vastness, luminous distance’ – the endless possibilities beyond the horizons of our lives’.

The voices of 18 poets, all successful entrants in te Segora Poetry Competitions, respond to the fact of warfare and the need to come to terms with its devastating consequences
